Arthur: Call the elections

From a former Prime Minister, to a current one, Owen Arthur sent a clear message to Freundel Stuart yesterday.
“Bring it on.”
A pumped-up Arthur rose from a seat in the back of a town hall meeting where he wasn’t event scheduled to speak and lay it on the line in a fiery 45-minute impromptu speech, calling on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to stop wasting time and call the next general election, constitutionally due by April next year.
“Call the election and let’s get this thing out of the way,” Arthur said to more than 100 Barbados Labour Party faithful who were on hand for the town meeting at the Grantley Adams School in St Joseph. The meeting had been convened by Member of Parliament for St Joseph, Deputy Opposition Leader, Dale Marshall so constituents could discuss eligibility for access to the country’s Catastrophe Fund.
According to Arthur, Stuart should waste little more time, since the electorate has already had enough of the current Democratic Labour Party administration. “When people are in their hour of greatest need, they should be able to look to their Government for help. They can’t do that with this Government, so Barbadians want to get this over with. Barbados must not be governed this way.”
“They have already made up their minds about who they want to lead them,” the former Prime Minister added. “Week by week, it is like Barbados is caught up in a horror show, and it is being shown in slow motion.

The election will be called when the current administration is good and ready, not when you you would like it. You should also realize that your time is gone and that we are not looking for aged relics to run our government. You left enough damage in the form of Al Barrack, Hardwood, Dodds, Clico, Alexandra, 47 unjustified and very highly paid consultants, etc, etc. We have had enough of you and your team and we not forgetful. The people of Barbados are now an informed and educated electorate ...

Posted by Kenneth King 8 months ago: It just amazes me how he barks loud and when the electorate thinks he is the man, what happens is that the country is left with so much debt that it takes almost two terms to repair giving him a chance to inflect no confidence not knowing we are not so stupid. The World at the moment are having a difficult challenge because of trade war with the big bullies of Trade, whereas we little pocket money Islands does not stand a chance so how can Mr. Arthur take them on. Our problems are that we have not developed our Agricultural products and other produce to cut the import bill, also get those who responsible for Tourism put more effort into our marketing and compete with the other nations doing so. I have not seen a Barbadian Add in Germany, I do not know which cities are targeted but for sure, not the areas where I am working. If we are serious about having this country full with Tourist then we must be prepared to spend more. Give grants to some of the small Hotels and Apartments already in business to modify their rooms and bring the standard to a good level for too many Tourist complain of how some rooms not nice, toilets and furniture not up to standard, cuss me if you will but when these people get home they make their voice heard by going to the media or internet; these are the things that should be of our interest. Keep the price's competitive knowing Spain, Portugal and other tourist areas are making good bargains as the tourist does not have to sit in a plane for 14 or 16 hours to get here.I personally feel we are pricing ourselves out of the Market. We are not leaving enough room for them to spend on other areas on the Island, so that everybody can get a piece of the cake.

Posted by SANDREA BUTCHER 8 months ago: I am tired of bi-partisan politics. Tired! The Opposition opposes just for the sake of opposing. Everybody makes empty promises. Stupse! We want action! Rational decisions that benefit the society. Policies that enhance the society and decisions that lead to economic growth. We are tired of the political business cycle. We want sound leadership like that of the past. Developmental plans that will take Barbados forward. A restructured economy that is not dependent on the whims and fancies of tourists. Forward ever, backward never!

Posted by Pan Wallie 8 months ago: I am with you @ Sandrea Butcher.It seems like we will have to buy flour by the 5 lb bags, make some men (women too) and programme them llike machines with chips to do the will of the people. 75% of the machines we repeatedly vote into Parliament seem to be programmed only for money grabbing. The other25% are programmed for powermongering and we know power corrupts.

Posted by SANDREA BUTCHER 8 months ago: @Kennith King, I believe that you hit the nail on the head and smashed it straight through the piece of 4x4. Our tourism product is too expensive. We want to attract the wealthy who will go up to Limegrove and shop at the upscale stores or dine at the ridiculously overpriced restaurants. What we forget is that there are tourists who are average citizens like us who have to save for up to five years to take a trip.
