AT THE TENTS: Juniors impress

THE JUNIOR CALYPSONIANS continue to impress with their aptitude to the art form.
Patrons at the second pitching of the Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch Tent at Combermere School Auditorium on Sunday night arguably got more than they paid for, as the singers in both the 8-12 and 13-18 categories sharpened their skills for the expected battle royal at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on July 5 for the semi-final stage of the competition.
Oftentimes referred to as the nursery for calypso, the standard of material and high-level performances from the youngsters have catapulted the juniors and placed them on par with and in some cases surpassed the senior and more seasoned campaigners.
In a departure from what obtained last week at the first showing at The Lester Vaughan School, it was a mixed pot, with singers from both categories appearing in both halves, rather than showing an age group per half.
Three of the 25 songs presented spoke about fathers, but the treatment given by Raanan, Sparkle T and Mighty KT was completely different, and members of the audience showed their appreciation for each.
While it is difficult to single out a particular song or act of the night, since who did not have great songs made up for it in performance and vice versa, some performers definitely left a memorable impression.
Topping the list was Ah-Dee-Lah with De Letter. It is an interesting treatment of an HIV/AIDS theme and the voice of the disease speaking through a letter adds a freshness to the topic, and it has a catchy melody.
The others included Sugar Apple (Litter), Jatanya (Brand Name), De MC (Get It Out Ya Head), Sammy G (My Tribute), Lady Nica (Walk In My Shoes) and Mighty KT (A Child’s Plea).
Kudos also to the junior MC, 15-year-old Kyle kyckcc Cozier, who goes as Ice for short. He is naturally funny and handled himself well on stage.
