That’s the position the cash-strapped Government of Barbados has adopted on the disbursement of education awards including the controversial bursaries.
And the first item of business when the House of Assembly resumes today at 10 a.m. after the summer recess will be an amendment to the 1983 Education Act to limit the categories of people who would be eligible for bursaries, grants, awards, scholarships and exhibitions.
In the name of Minister of Education Ronald Jones, the measure would delete Section 47(2) and replace it with a new section stipulating that “a person shall only be entitled to the bursaries, grants, awards, scholarships and exhibitions referred to under Subsection (1) where that person is a citizen of Barbados”.
