Bad timing

December is no time to be presenting a budget or ministerial statement to Barbadians.

That’s how the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) feels about the decision of the Freundel Stuart administration to bring a Ministerial Statement today. It is the second successive year that a statement addressing the country’s economic woes has come a week before Christmas.

The last Ministerial Statement from Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler announcing that thousands of public servants would be sent home and other cuts were coming was delivered on December 13, 2013.

Executive director of the BCCI, Lisa Gale, said if Sinckler’s statement delivered more bad news, it would most gravely affect the island’s retail sector and distributive sector.
