Barbados’ netballers fashioned their first win at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, when they defeated St Lucia in a classification contest at the SECC Hall yesterday evening.
Still, they will drop two places from the ninth spot in the rankings in which they entered the competition. The squad has placed a record seventh at the 2010 Games in Delhi, India.
The Bajan girls cruised to a 53-27 win, a morale boosting result for them after they completed their group exchanges without a victory.
With veteran Laurel Browne too ill to play, young goal-shooter Shonica Wharton led the Barbados offence, dropping in 41 points from 45 attempts. Goal attack Sheniqua Thomas added six from 10 attempts while Nikita Piggot, also playing goal attack, scored six from 12 attempts.
Goal attack Shem Maxwell top scored for St Lucia with 16 from 24 attempts.
On the tennis tables, national champion Krystle Harvey and former national champion.
Sherrice Felix looped and smashed their way into the second round of the women’s doubles when the event opened at the Scotstoun Sport and Leisure Facility yesterday morning.
The pair defeated Anolyn Lulu and Pareina Matariki of Vanuatu 11-4, 12-10, 11-6.
In the afternoon session the duo lost to  New Zealanders Li Chunli and Li Karen at two, six and four to end Barbados’ participation in all table tennis events. (BA/PR)
