Barbados has a new sprint star.

Mario Burke brought joy to the island last night after powering to victory in the Under-17 boys’ 100 metres final at the CARIFTA Games in The Bahamas.

The tall, 15-year-old Harrison College student took control after 70 metres and crossed the line a comfortable winner despite easing up at the end.

It was Barbados’ first medal of the Games at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau and it was followed by another gold from Akela Jones in the girls’ Under-20 long jump.

Burke was timed at 10.61 seconds, well ahead of second-placed hometown boy Keanu Pennerman, who clocked 10.85 seconds.

We are proud of all our athletes, could we please have tv coverage of the event or do we need sponsors for that?
