Bajans on target

Barbados captured their second Kia 2012 Southern Caribbean Archery Championship with a decisive 186 points when the four-nation tournament climaxed on Sunday at the Kickstart Football Grounds in Wildey.
Barbados, who had taken the inaugural title in 2006 when the local archery association celebrated its 10th anniversary, ended with 18 medals, six of each colour, to beat arch rivals Trinidad and Tobago, who earned 174 points.   
Trinidad and Tobago won five gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Martinique, who scored 161 points, gained three golds, a silver and four bronze medals and Guadeloupe picked up a gold, a silver and two bronze medals.
With Trinidad and Tobago breathing down their necks, Barbados withstood the challenge on the final day, with Dwight Hagley snatching gold in the recurve men and Charlene Goddard matching in the recurve women while Janos Psendtner took the recurve masters. Barbados also earned gold in the mixed recurve.
President John Annel of the Barbados Archery Association was elated with the performance of the Bajan archers. He said that Barbados would be going all out to retain their crown in Martinique next year. (KB)
