BARBADOS IS LEADING the region in absenteeism from work, said Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) representative Marguerite Estwick.
Speaking at a BEC panel discussion on Sick Leave – The Employers’ Plight vs The Employees Right on Thursday at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St Michael, she said the irresponsible practices of some employees were seriously hurting Barbados’ productivity.
“Most cases that precipitate themselves to the attention of senior and executive management or the board level for some decision are cases, when you follow the statistics, where individuals will take their birthdays off every year or you can follow their off-the-job or part-time interests on an annual, seasonal basis.
“These cases are causing employers in Barbados serious concern. We have a situation in Barbados where dollars are being lost, not thousands of dollars but hundreds of thousands of dollars.  (CA)
