The following is a statement made by the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners following talks with the board of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) suspended the industrial action at all institutions in Barbados, as per the advice of the Honourable Minister of Health to facilitate negotiations with the board of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The BAMP council met the board members to commence discussions.
The process came to an abrupt end after two and a half hours, when BAMP informed the board that they had prepared and booked a paid advertisement as per the mandate from their members prior to agreeing for the meeting with the board. The negotiatioins had reached a crucial stage on several points.
BAMP wishes to advise the general public and its membership that the industrial action remains suspended to facilitate a proposed meeting with the Minister of Health and the QEH board.
BAMP reinforces its commitment to the public to continue its role in the delivery of health care. BAMP continues to wish for a speedy resolution of the impasse.

BMAP council came to the meeting with the knowledge that it had bought advertising space to promote its agenda. Therefore, the outcome of the meeting was a foregone conclusion from BMAP’s perspective. I have to agree with the chairman of the QEH board that BMAP acted in bad faith. The QEH and the medical system in general is frowned upon by most Barbadians living outside of the country. When we visit our attitude is ” call a Travel Agent” if you fall sick. That is. get out of Barbados as fast as possible. Those consultants are focussed on their private practice.
