The woman who is leading First Citizens’ acquisition of Butterfield Bank says she knows there is anti-Trinidad sentiment in Barbados right now.

But Sharon Christopher, the lawyer and deputy chief executive officer of First Citizens Group said the company wanted earnestly for the local public to trust the institution and accept it was not here to deprive Barbados of anything.

Christopher, who flew into the island Tuesday and has been meeting with Butterfield’s management, identified local acceptance of the Trinidad government-owned bank as one of its major challenges.

“One of the biggest challenges is for people to accept First Citizens because now in Barbados there is a fair amount of anti-Trinidad and Tobago sentiment and we would like people to know that we are not coming into the country to strip off assets.

Good Luck, lady!
Bajans love to hate Trinidad
and have reasons and excuses for doing so.

One is simple Success/Wealth Envy.
Two is that you Trinis are catching Flying Fish
with OUR Bajan serial numbers on them.

I'm sure there are others you'll get to hear about.

At least you are aware of how Barbadians feel, Ms Christopher. The question is would you say those feelings are baseless? Trust a trinidadian institution? who me?

Trinidad and Tobago want the whole enchilada. EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING THAT THEY CAN PUT THEIR HANDS ON. All the smart BAJAN have to do, is put their pennies elsewhere, anywhere beside First Citizens. Sooner rather than later Barbados will be known as Trinidad and Tobago-BARBADOS and the Trident will have more red, black and white than blue and yellow. Just got sick just thinking about it.

I hear you, but they may not even bother to add Barbados to the name. Why should they, after all they don’t have to.
Painfully sad times

@ Everyone: And why are more and more businesses from T&T coming still coming to Barbados? Answer: Because Bajans support them! Each time another company is taken over by T&T, all that happens is Bajans quarrel and complain for a little while, but afterwards it is business as usual. We bank at their banks, buy their products, pay for their entertainers to perform at our events, and welcome their people. On the other hand what do they do? Bank only at their banks, buy only their products, and replace our staff with their own. Wake up Barbados! Take a leaf or two from their book!

Forgive my bias as I was once married to a beautiful Trinidadian Spanish / Indian girl.
Do the xenophobic commentators here really think Barbados can go it alone without Big Brother Trinidad and Tobago?
