Barbados leading CUT field

Barbados won seven gold, eight silver and four bronze medals, after the first day of competition in the 2012 Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Games at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, and were leading the hosts by a mere three points.

Team Barbados had 204.5 points and Jamaica 201.5 with yesterday’s events still to be contested.

Winning gold for Barbados were Rivaldo Leacock with a new championship record of 3 minutes, 24.73 seconds in the open boys’ 1 200 metres run.

Tristan Evelyn rebounded from injury to take the Under-15 girls’ 100 metres in 12.29 seconds and Rosette Hoyte also put her name in the books with a record run clocked at 58.99 seconds in the Under-13 girls’ 400 metres.

Tremaine Smith brought back-to-back gold, winning the Under-13 boys’ 400m in 56.48 seconds and the final individual gold medal was won by Ajani Haddock with 13.45 seconds in the Under-11 boys’ 100m.

Barbados also took gold in both of the 800m (100x100x200x400) medley relays, the girls clocking 1:47.70 and the boys 1:35.88.

The silver medallists were Leacock with 50.89 in the 400 metres; Tiana Bowen with 58.14 in the Under-15 girls’ race and Shonita Brome with 1.47 metres in the Under-15 girls’ high jump.

In the Under-11 division, Rishaunna Padmore was second in the 300m in 46.75 seconds and Jahlarni Toney also copped silver in the boys’ race in 45.86 seconds.

Beyonce Alleyne leaped 3.28m in the Under-9 girls’ long jump and 4.23m was enough to give Sean Raphael the silver in the boys’ event. Brianne Waldron also took silver in the cricket ball throw with a throw of 31.36 metres.

The four bronze medallists were Leilani Haddock with a time of 14.16 seconds in the Under-11 girls’ 100m dash; Felicia Jarvis with 43 metres flat in the Under-13 girls’ cricket ball throw; Kentoine Browne in the Under-15 boys’ 100m in 11.88 seconds and Jevon Hunte with 13.50m in the Under-15 boys’ shot put.

Also competing for Barbados were Hayley Matthews, who was fifth in the Under-15 girls’ long jump (1.46m) and fourth in the javelin (29.99m); Deshon Trent, who was seventh in the boys’ high jump at 1.56m and Jaria Hoyte who was fourth in the 1 200m in 4:02.07.

Deshawn Toppin was seventh in the Under-13 boys’ cricket ball throw with 57.20 metres. Both Shontae Cole (13.42) and Jamahl Burke (12.83) were sixth in the 100m for Under-11s. Jahlia Denny (3.81m) and Shem Williams (3.97) were fifth in the Under-11s’ long jump and Kemba Bobb-Gibson was also fifth in the cricket ball throw with 36.45m.

Samira Clarke was seventh in the Under-9 girls’ 80m dash in 12.68 seconds and Joshua Haynes fifth in the boys’ race in 11.78 seconds. (SAT)
