‘Barefoot preacher’ takes to the streets

REVEREND William St Clair, the Methodist minister familiarly known as the “barefoot preacher”, has taken his ministry to the streets.

St Clair, who lives in Ebenezer, St Philip, shared the Word of God with members of that community at a shop in the district on Sunday.

Though inclement weather led to a handful of people turning out with umbrellas to hear his message, the American attornery turned preacher said there were at least 40 people the week before.

St Clair was minister-in-charge of the Ebenezer Methodist Church for one year before he was transferred to Shrewsbury Methodist Church on October 12.

A week later he was reassigned to the James Street/Speightstown circuit, but stripped of pulpit duties.  Instead, he has been assigned to visit sick and shut-in members, among other duties.

Still questioning whether scripture or tradition should be the guiding principle for the church, St Clair said he thought the events unfolding within the church should be used as a launching pad for a much larger discussion on culture and ethics, rather than the focus being on him or his style of ministry.

“As the American, it is a little bit difficult for me to comment on what this means to Barbados culture, but I think there is an interesting story about if we truly are going to be a biblically-based community or are we just going to be culturally based.”

He said to move away from the Methodist Church and practise another religion would not address the problem, which was a disagreement over style.

St  Clair said he would be having the open-air ministry every Sunday night. (LK)
