Father of Independence Errol Walton Barrow was born in the parish of St Lucy on January 21, 1920.
Barrow swept to power as Premier in 1961, then became Barbados’ first Prime Minister at Independence in 1966. He lost power in 1976.
In 1986, he returned to power, dying in office on June 1, 1987.
His impressive record includes: architect of free secondary education in Barbados; supporter of the University of the West Indies; co-founder of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) and CARICOM. His likeness is on the island’s $50 note.
Today, Errol Barrow Day, is a national holiday.
Here, Sybil Barrow, the only surviving sister of the late National Hero, and his nephew Anthony Barrow paying rapt attention as Professor Eudine Barriteau delivered the annual Errol Barrow Memorial Lecture on Thursday night at the Frank Collymore Hall.
