Defending champions Springer Memorial and runners-up Garrison Secondary had big wins in their opening matches on Thursday in the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Netball League Under-19 Competition.
Sadé-Mariah Greenidge, the team’s most experienced player, had the hot hands, scoring 42 goals from 51 attempts as Springer Memorial hammered Ellerslie 58-13. Khadija Domingo supported with ten goals, while Derise Adams and Adrenne Scantlebury combined for six.
Ellerslie, missing Chemyne Alleyne who is now at the Foundation School, relied on three shooters, with Shanice Hinds scoring nine, Shadia Clarke a perfect three from three and Leah Maynard scoring the other.
Rally champions Garrison sent a signal to the defending champions, who beat them in last year’s final, when they dismissed St George 46-16.
Vanessa Reid-Cox (17/22) and Nikita President powered Garrison to a 20-11 lead in the first half, but the offence exploded in the second with a new shooting pair.
Shannon Hackett came off the bench to miss only one of her 16 attempts and Jalicia Bascombe shared the workload with 11 from 13, outscoring St George 26-3.
St George’s usually reliable Shannya Wiggins had an off day, scoring only eight goals from 23 attempts.
In other matches, The Lester Vaughan School defeated Queen’s College 26-17, with Victoria McMillan scoring 20 of the goals, and Combermere held off Alleyne 19-15.
St Lucy defeated Foundation 22-18, and the match between The Lodge School and Deighton Griffith was postponed. (SAT)
