SCORE ONE for the Blackbirds.
Toni Atherley scored 17 points and barely missed out on a triple-double as last season’s losing league finalists UWI Blackbirds downed reigning champs Station Hill Cavaliers 54-41 in yesterday’s women’s basketball league-opener at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Atherley added nine rebounds and eight assists while also sparking a decisive 15-4 run in the fourth quarter that broke open a tight four-point contest (39-35).
Jennifer Joseph-Hackett scored 16 points, Shannon Green chipped in with 12 rebounds while Wanda Agard-Belgrave led the Cavs with eight points and eight boards.
Earlier, Ashlee Daniel had a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Makela Walcott scored 19 as Combined Schools Hoopsters held off a late charge from the reconstructed Clapham Bulls to win 65-63. (JM)
