BL&P bills may rise

BL&P bills may rise Stephen Worme (Internet picture)

BARBADIANS COMPLAINING about high electricity bills have been told that the worst may be yet to come.

International oil prices are predicted to rise and it would be unrealistic to expect the Barbados Light & Power Company not to pass on the increase to electricity users or to expect Government to subsidize it for “any extended period of time”, the company’s chief marketing officer Stephen Worme said yesterday.

“It is not that things cannot be done [to ease the situation], but what people have to realize is that this . . . rather than get better, may even get worse,” he said. “There are predictions of oil prices even going higher and to think that a company can absorb [them] or a government can subsidize for any extended period of time is really a dreamer’s paradise.”

Worme made the comments on Getting Down To Brass Tacks, a talk show hosted by the Voice of Barbados radio station. (TY)

This is unacceptable from BL & P.  In my district, the electricity goes of religiously every thirteen days for one hour.  Of course, no one is ever reimbursed for the inconvenience.  It is interesting that any drop in the price of oil however slight is not passed on to consumers.  Barbadians can take only so much!!!

It is time that this madness in Barbados stop. Here in Germany there are using Wind power to use as an alternative in some areas and there are cities bigger than Barbados and I cannot understand why these methods are not being used. So there must only be a reason to milk the poor people of this country. I am tired of these companies using the oil situation as an excuse, we are but a small fish and can get along with less oil if we used the Wind power as our main source but some people may think different as the profits will not be that great. It is time the Government look at other possibilities to ease the tax payers from this burden of extravagant pricing of the utilities and petrol for our transport in this country; we must act now, is it not better if we borrow money and fill a certain site on the island for these projects and save the country from extensive cost of living…

I wonder why it’s increasing again; especially after I read that they made a huge profit in 2010 of $30 something million.

What’s the reason? Is it that so far for the year it doesn’t look as though 2011’s profit will surpass 2010???
