BLP: Have no fear

The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) moved quickly yesterday to limit the fallout from a rift between Opposition Leader Mia Mottley and former Prime Minister Owen Arthur.
But not before Prime Minister Freundel Stuart fired some criticisms of his own at Mottley, saying he and Arthur shared a common view about aspects of her behaviour.
“I have always sensed an uneasiness in him about her ascent to the highest levels of Barbados,” Stuart told the DAILY NATION. “He’s tried his best to send warnings to the country.
“He’s done it diplomatically and diplomacy has not worked, so he has come straight to us and told us [what he thinks].”
Yesterday, the Opposition Leader quickly tendered an apology, after media reports that Arthur said he was “now unable . . . to subject myself to Miss Mottley’s leadership”.
Arthur, in a December 30 letter to Leader of Opposition Business in Parliament Kerrie Symmonds, complained that Mottley had ignored his advice and nominated him publicly for her proposed Eminent Persons Group to deal with the economic crisis facing the country. (TY)
