BARBADOS Red Cross volunteer Aldo Babb, who assisted in removing the bodies of victims of the Campus Trendz fire, was found hanging last Monday in the one-room plywood building where he slept, a stone’s throw away from his girlfriend’s family home at Chalky Mount, in St Andrew.
Babb, 39, was a full-time employee in the laundry of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Reports indicated that investigations were under way into Babb’s involvement with the removal of the body of Shanna Griffith, 18, from the crime scene where she and five others perished last Friday night in Tudor Street, The City.
Authorities reportedly want to find out who gave instructions to remove the body, which was later left uncovered on a stretcher in the hallway at the Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department.
There have also been questions about Babb, who was on duty at the National Stadium with the Red Cross, being asked to assist with the body’s removal.
Yesterday, a relative who declined to give her name, said Babb’s girlfriend Sandy Alleyne discovered his body hanging from a rafter soon after returning home from the first day on a new job in the canteen of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
That relative told the Midweek Nation: “Apparently, all the time he was saying he was not feeling well. He was having chest problems. He stayed home from work yesterday, but they thought he was inside just resting.
When [Sandy] went down there to check on him, she saw him and she ran out. We just heard her screaming and calling for somebody to come.”
Ermine Vaughn, mother of Babb’s girlfriend, was still in a state of disbelief when the Midweek Nation team visited her home yesterday.
Dampened mood
The tragic incident dampened what promised to be a happy school term start for Babb’s 13-year-old son; for his daughter Deandre Greenidge, who was looking forward to her first day of study in hospitality services; and for stepson Shammar Alleyne, who was due to begin an apprenticeship programme yesterday.
Babb was also the father of two teenaged daughters.
Standing in the room where the suicide was allegedly committed, a visibly distraught Shammar said: “I feel real terrible knowing that he and my mother had big dreams.
“They were planning to get married before the year done . . . knowing that my little brother is still young; and right now he is not talking to anybody.
“He was a good man and I sorry he [Babb] did this to us at this time. It got my mother hurt.”
Neither Babb’s mother nor his girlfriend was available for comment. (TS/GC)

Comment Linkthe article was very confusing and left many questions unanswered.where was this young man before the fire? take a look at this man and take a look at the police sketch for the person that is being sought in connection with his crime.

Comment LinkThere is some speculation about the similiarity between this unfortunate man and the picture of the suspect who was identified as a perosn of interest. It might be useful to follow up this issue to see where it leads

Comment LinkFriday’s tragedy has scarred many. The effects and repercussions are far reaching; they do not simply affect the families of the six who perished. They also affect the lives of the personnel on the scene, from policemen to paramedics. One can only guess as to what effect being on the scene, hearing screams, and knowing that little could be done affected those present that night. It cannot be easy. Think about this.

Comment LinkMy deepest sympathy goes out to the family of the deceased. I just want to say that no matter what you are going through there is always light at the end of the tunnel. There is a God above who knows all and will deliver you from what ever you are going through. There is nothing too hard for Him to do. Taking your life is not the solution. To the family, if you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour I pray that through this tragedy you will find Him and accept him before it is too late.

Comment LinkThis is very tragic. One should not judge. This is called PTS-Post-traumatic-syndrome. There was a fire fighter who pulled a little girl from a well in the USA and he committed suicide. Not every one can see such tragedies and not be affected. Please pray and comfort his loved ones. Please do not cast judgement. Why were body bags taken to the tragedy scene to cover these victims. Come into the 21st century.

Comment LinkIt is a well known fact here in UK, that individuals who witnessed or have become involved in a traumatic incident, willingly or unwillingly, subsequently need trauma counselling themselves. There must be sound reasons why this activity is prioritised. Hence, counselling is readily available locally, regionally and nationally for all potential victims - members of the emergency services, witnesses, families, those caught up unwittingly- in the aftermath of a traumatic incident, such as the weekend’s fire.
Bajans, stop the ‘chinese whispering’ and give the RBPF the assistance now required to apprehend the real villians.

Comment Linki am going to say it was a very sad day for our barbadian culture in which things of that nature would never happen but due to lack of not sticking to our own system of justice where you break the law…..you pay and you pay dearly

Comment LinkI agree with Edward’s comments. Something is not right here and the police should do whatever it takes to find out WHY this young man took his life. There are too many things going on in Barbados that’s being kept secret. Changes need to happen and I don’t mean “to be looking at it”.

Comment LinkAnother tragic day in the 166 square miles.
My sympathy goes out to the family of the deceased and especially those little children.
If the report of the youngest child not speaking, clearly trauma
has set in. Let’s see how well the local/national community will respond to yet another family in serious crisis

Comment LinkSherrann, you stole my thunder.I was scrolling through the comments when I
came across the same sentiments I was going to express. It was indeed a selfish act on the part of this individual. His selfish act has left his girlfriend
and kids to struggle through this tragic loss, not to mention economic hardship.

Comment LinkSo Mike, Toronto, are your comments helpful in any way to the people he left behind? Why didn’t you offer your condolences instead?
To tell them that he was selfish, and remind them of their struggle and economic hardship, is something you obviously felt they needed to know.
I am sure that they are thanking you all like now for your warm and caring words. You are all heart.
