Special Olympics Barbados is getting a boost in preparation for the 2015 International Special Olympics.
Preparations for the event in Los Angeles was helped by a donation from Digicel at the Barbados Olympic Association headquarters last Thursday.
Digicel commercial director Alex Tasker said since their initial partnering with Special Olympics Barbados in 2003, the Olympics held a special place in the hearts of Digicel and its employees and would continue to do so.
As a result, Digicel re-affirmed its commitment to Special Olympics Barbados by making the first official contribution to the new Road To World Games fund.
Barbados is hoping to send a team of more than 30 athletes to the games.
National director of Special Olympics Barbados Victor Chapman said the organization hoped to introduce additional sports such as golf and softball.
“The popularity of softball in North America is amazing and we would like to be the first Caribbean team and country to take a team to the United States to play softball,” Chapman said.
He was grateful for Digicel’s donation and said he hoped it would encourage other corporate entities to contribute to helping the athletes get to Los Angeles.
Chair of Special Olympics Barbados, Thelma Brathwaite said the event not only allowed athletes to travel and see new places, but it also played an integral part in the development of the athletes’ mental, physical, spiritual and social skills.
“Coaches can attest to the fact that these athletes enjoy greater self-confidence, improved physical fitness and they develop a more positive self-image,” Brathwaite said.
The fund will be at CIBC FirstCaribbean International bank under the account number 1001111009.
The fund-raising effort continues with a bingo night, which will be take place at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Tuesday at 7 o’clock. (SM)
