ENGLAND-BASED?Barbados football captain Emmerson Boyce, who led Wigan Athletic to a historic triumph in last year’s English F.A. Cup final is among the nominees for the 2013 National Sports Council’s (NSC) Senior Outstanding Sportsman.
The NSC’s annual awards will be held at the Frank Collymore Hall on Saturday when the long-awaited announcement of the Sports Personality of the Year will be made at the ceremony.
The 34-year-old Boyce, who is a defender, played a key role in Wigan’s 1-0 victory over favourites Manchester City in last May’s final at the Wembley Stadium.
He will be vying with horse racing jockey, Rico Walcott, who won the Northlands Park title with 153 wins in Canada last year, Central American and Caribbean (CAC) light heavyweight champion bodybuilder Stevenson Belle and weight-lifter Ivorn McKnee for the coveted award.
Antoinette Downie and Saskia Griffith, who won fitness and bikini crowns respectively at last year’s CAC?Championships in the Santo Domingo and gained their professional badges, are among the nominess for the Senior Outstanding Woman as well as dynamic West Indies women’s cricketer, Deandra Dottin, the Most Valuable Player of last year’s Tri-Series with England and New Zealand.
World-rated junior surfer Chelsea Tuach, who came third at the World Junior Championships in Brazil and also won the Association of Surfing Professionals Tour event in Puerto Rico, heads the lists of nominees for the Junior Outstanding Girl. Also in this category are teenage West Indies women’s cricketer Shaquana Quintyne, athlete Tia-Adana Belle, who won a silver medal in the hurdles at the World Youth Championship in Ukraine and swimmer Hannah Gill, a triple CARIFTA?gold medallist.
CARIFTA?100-metre gold medallist and World Youth finalist, Mario Burke, surfer Josh Burker, volleyballer Andriy Stapleton, weightlifter Brien Best and chess player Orlando Husbands have been nominated for the Junior Outstanding Boy.
The Sport Personality of the Year will be chosen from among the winners of each category. (EZS)
