GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General Irwin La Rocque says the 15-member regional grouping is prepared to assist Trinidad and Tobago “within its capacity” as the oil rich twin island republic deals with the aftermath of heavy floods that killed two people and caused widespread damage last weekend.
The authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have so far estimated the damage caused in the west of the island at TT$109 million (One TT dollar = US$0.16 cents) but said that the figure could rise as assessments continue.
In a message, LaRocque extended “deepest sympathies to the  families of those who died in the floods” adding that CARICOM “is deeply saddened by the loss of life and the trail of devastation left by massive flooding on the western peninsula of Trinidad in particular and other areas of Trinidad and Tobago.
“The Community shares the concerns of the families of those who have been displaced by the deluge and of those who remain missing at this time. We pray that they are found safe and sound,” he said, adding that recognizing that the efforts of the entire nation will be needed to address the damage caused by the flooding, the rapid response and untiring efforts of the government to contain the situation is extremely heartening.
“The Community stands with Trinidad and Tobago in heartfelt solidarity and readiness to give any assistance and support that lies within its capacity. The courage and resilient spirit of the people of Trinidad and Tobago shall surely assist in withstanding and overcoming the challenges of this most trying time,” LaRocque added. (CMC)
