A blistering career-best 160 by Jonathan Carter catapulted Sagicor UWI into an excellent position to force a win over ICBL Empire in their fifth round LIME Elite Division match.
Carter swung the pendulum UWI’s way yesterday, after the four-time defending champions were in danger of conceding the lead at 166 for nine.
He shared a last-wicket stand of 77 with Ryan Austin to lift the hosts to 243 all out, in response to Empire’s 203 for eight declared.
Table leaders Empire will resume today on 113 for four with a lead of 73. Much will depend on Kevin Stoute, who is unbeaten on 27.
The left-handed Carter bludgeoned 12 sixes and nine fours off 145 balls, in three hours before he was last out, caught off Ryan Hinds who took three for 43.
The all-rounder entered the fray in the day’s third over, when UWI, who resumed from the overweek 22 for three, lost the wicket of Floyd Reifer for four.
Carter joined Chad Walton and they posted a fifth-wicket partnership of 69 before Walton was caught behind for 33.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Carter counter-attacked and raced to his 12th century at this level with a four to long-on.
It came in 146 minutes off 109 deliveries, spiced with eight fours and four sixes. Carter brought up the lead in grand style smashing Nikolai Charles for a third six in an over which cost 18.
