A veteran of the political scene has advised young politicians to put in the leg work and be more visible at times other than around elections.
The advice has come from Ronald Toppin, who celebrated 20 years as the Barbados Labour Party parliamentary representative for St Michael North with a church service at Christ the King Church, Rock Dundo, St Michael, yesterday.
Speaking after the service, Toppin, who said he first entered elective politics in 1987 and then contested and lost the St Michael North seat in 1991, attributed his long-running representation to being seen in the community.
And this, he noted, was what up-and-coming politicians needed to do.
“I think that a lot of politicians don’t understand, especially some of the newer politicians, that it really takes a lot of time to build a relationship with the constituents,” he told the Daily Nation.
