Barbadians’ views on homosexuality and buggery are shifting.
However, despite the change in attitude from 2004 to last year, a small faction of society holds fast to the view there should be mandatory prison terms and that the death penalty should be meted out to men who engage in sex with other men.
Speaking on Thursday night at the launch of the report: Attitudes To Homosexuality In Barbados and the panel discussion titled Sexual Diversity & Equality: Possibility For Change, director of CADRES Peter Wickham noted that between 2004, when the first set of research was conducted, and 2013 attitudes had shifted.
Saying that he looked at the “disconnect between the largely tolerant and accepting attitude in Barbadians” and asked why do “Barbadians in this context support the buggery law”, he said there was “clearly a disconnect” which he identified as “the incongruous truth [of] Barbados [in] 2013”.
