Poultry producers plan to protest what they say is the imminent importation of chicken wings.
Carlyle Brathwaite, president of the Barbados Egg & Poultry Producers Association (BEPA), said that last Friday he received a text which stated “a willingness
by persons to look at the idea of importing chicken wings to Barbados”.
Speaking today during a BEPA seminar at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Brathwaite said the importation of wings could be devastating to the industry as it had the potential to bring unfair competition to farmers forced to keep up with prices offered by international companies.
He warned that BEPA was closely monitoring the importation of “so-called processed chicken” which was continuing to be a problem for the industry.
Brathwaite said the association had been attending meetings with the relevant authorities to have the issue alleviated. (AH)

I also believe that it is a myth that small Island states such as ours can feed themselves.Territories such as Barbados only came about because of globalization, if not for shipping, sugar cane and slavery Barbados would not even be here. Countries such as ours are only sustainable thanks to globalization.
Our poultry industry is substandard and uncompetitive and will be gone within 20 years.
