Minister of Health Donville Inniss yesterday brought out the statistics regarding Barbados’ continued challenge with non-communicable diseases.

They didn’t make for a pretty picture.

One in every four Barbadians suffers from at least one chronic disease. By 2025, that number  is expected to increase to one in every three dealing with high blood pressure, hypertension or diabetes.

Between 2009 and 2010, 559 Barbadians suffered strokes and another 182 suffered heart attacks. On average, chronic disease sufferers spent six days each admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, as did heart attack victims, further stretching the resources of the island’s state-run hospital.
