Barbados’ new Chief Justice Justice has offered a solution to speed up settlement of disputes and reduce the backlog of court cases.
It is Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
In addressing yesterday’s luncheon of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is celebrating its 185th anniversary, Chief Justice Marston Gibson, told entrepeneurs and legal practitioners that the courts in Barbados were in crisis, and he was seriously considering issuing a practice direction to have ADR practised as an alternative to long, drawn-out court disputes.
Noting that there was no Mediation Act in Barbados, he revealed that the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) didn’t have such an act either but ADR was practised there as a result of a direction issued by the OECS Chief Justice.
