The unsightly scene of plastic bags and other garbage floating in the Careenage has once again prompted the staff of the Urban Development Commission (UDC) to take action to help stop the destruction of the environment.

Yesterday afternoon most of the staff, led by UDC director Derek Alleyne, undertook their second clean-up in recent weeks of the waterway in the heart of Bridgetown.

Alleyne said that by the end of the exercise they had collected at least eight large bags of garbage. One of the disturbing finds was the huge quantity of plastic material found under the Charles Duncan O’Neale Bridge.

Here, Alleyne (left), with other UDC staff, technical officer Colin Blades (centre) and compliance officer for quality assurance Cyprian Yearwood, navigating the waterway to remove the refuse.
