When the new Safety And Health At Work Act (SHAW) comes into effect in January many businesses will not be ready and will be liable to be held in breach of the legislation.

Principal consultant with B.A.G Consulting Limited, Anthony ‘Tony’ Rocheford, said the SHAW was passed by Parliament in 2005, but a number of businesses had not prepared themselves systematically to get up to the standard that was expected.   

These companies, he said, were waiting for the proclamation of the legislation before starting work, not understanding that companies that did not have safety measures in place would be in breach of the legislation when it was proclaimed.

Rocheford was speaking at the Industrial Health and Safety Seminar, organized by the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) through its Export Readiness Training programme in collaboration with the Cave Hill School of Business. (LK)
