Controversy over gift of land to Rihanna
Wed, June 16, 2010 - 12:17 AM
CONTROVERSY reared its ugly head yesterday as Barbados celebrated the achievements of pop star Rihanna with an Opposition MP querying Government’s choice of the exclusive, upscale Apes Hill, rather than any of the other new developments, like Bushy Park, to gift her a house spot.
But St George North MP Gline Clarke was told his question showed he had a “snobbish attitude”.
Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley, who introduced the resolution in the House of Assembly to vest 2 635 square metres of land at Apes Hill, St James in the name of the international star – Robyn Rihanna Fenty – also chided Clarke for his “audacity” and asked whether the exclusive community was “too good” for her.
Lashley noted that Clarke’s query was “suggesting to me, indirectly, that Apes Hill is too good for this young Barbadian”.
“To me, it was one downside in this debate that a Member . . . could be questioning why we are looking at land in Apes Hill for Rihanna, and why not Westbury.”
He also recalled Clarke saying someone had asked why Government was paying millions of dollars for land for someone who was making millions of dollars in the entertainment industry.
“The . . . member sat in a Cabinet that wasted taxpayers’ money on things that were promised that never came to fruition, and [there] was no protest,” he said.
“But here we [are] now supporting a young Barbadian that actually was able to penetrate the American music industry – and it is not easy to penetrate the American music industry – paving the way forward for other young aspiring entertainers, and a member in this House had the audacity to get up and question a Government that is making a contribution and rewarding a young Barbadian for his or her efforts; he has the audacity to get up and question why this Government is doing that.”
Clarke interrupted to say he had asked a simple, legitimate question: Whose idea it was for the land and whether it was Government’s or Sir Charles Williams’, and why Apes Hill and not Bushy Park or St Lucy?
“Is Apes Hill too good for Robyn Rihanna Fenty?” Lashley asked.
Clarke said he had never said Apes Hill was too good for anybody, but Government had to say why it chose Apes Hill.
Lashley said Cabinet took the Apes Hill decision in February 2008, but he had brought the Bushy Park matter to Parliament only two weeks ago.(AB)

Comment LinkI agree with Government gifting the land to Rihanna but the idea that a member cannot or should not ask a question is ignorant!
Mr. Lashley is simply politicising the issue which is low.
Mr. Clarke’s question is legitimate!

Comment LinkIs this a part of the Land for the Landless program? Dear people, I admire Ms. Fenty’s accomplishments more than most and I take pride in hearing her Bajan accent around the globe. But do not let pride undermine prudent financial decision. Rihanna can afford to purchase her own land. Stop spending resources from the government treasury to give extravagant gift in such perilous economic times! MPs, business leaders, look around. There are unemployed Bajans and homeless Bajans in dire need of help. Stop wasting government time and resources on giving land to a multimillionaire! This is not an investment in Barbados’ future in the least bit. Weather the land in sin Bushy Park or Apes Hill is immaterial.

Comment Linkthis is the most ridiculous thing ever! why is barbados giving land to the one person in the island who can best afford it? she has purchased a multimillion dollar home in los angeles but she can’t spare a couple hundred thousand to stimulate part of the bajan economy? has anyone seen her in a commercial promoting barbados? no, she’s all about promoting herself. Her family lives in barbados why would she not contribute something to the dire need the health care system is facing like donating much needed ambulances to the QEH? Or arranging her finances to a place where her earnings are taxed by barbadian government and not the us government? she has done squat for barbados why are we bleeding to do so much for her?

Comment LinkThank you, Mr. Lashley for addressing the latent snobbery that exists amongst us Bajans. You were exactly right when you asked Mr. Clarke whether Apes Hill was too good for Robyn Rihanna Fenty in response to his suggestion that another location would be “appropriate for her”. When will we stop fighting our own?

Comment Linkit is not that the land is too good for Rihanna, but think of all the starving and homeless people in Bim who need land, what about the family who got evicted, they need some place, I agree we should do something for Rihanna but land when so many need a home and cannot afford one, rihanna can buy her own land she just bought a home in la for millions of dollars do you think she is coming back to Bim to live, not a chance, she will run home when things get to heavy for her to handle , that is when she need Bim , give that land to deserving family that are trying to help themselves, name a street after her, or tell her to send some of her millions to help repair the hospital .

Comment LinkI personally think that government should spend that money on the less fortunate in Barbados or donate more money to organizations that are helping the poor in Barbados it’s a nice suggestion but give her the keys to the island or name a street after her. she can afford any property in Barbados that she wants SPEND THAT MONEY ON THE POOR .

Comment LinkIm sure the government can show their appreciation for rihanna in other ways that by spending thousands of dollar in land to some one who can more than afford…the government is already seeking loans to pay back loans so it really doesn’t make any sense and I’m sure that Apes Hill is not to good for Rihanna but I’m sure it would be too good for any old bajan who desperately need land but the government wouldn’t just give it to them. Yes the just gets poorer while riches are given to the rich

Comment LinkOh Please! Let’s leave politics out of this minister Lashley and answer the question.
This girl has never done anything cultural in recognition of Barbados since she made it big. She has not even contributed to any charities or started one of her own in Barbados and you giving her land?
What way has she paved for other Barbadians? That it’s ok to make it big, neglect your people, date a guy that beats you, and promote an album that I will not allow my child to listen to? Is that it?
Well if that’s the case, I want no part of it.
Let her buy her own land. She can afford a million dollar house so she can afford to spend the money on a piece of the rock like the rest of the Barbadians who are struggling to own a piece of land of their own.

Comment LinkI was also wondering why in these tough times our government want to spend $1 million to give to a multi- millionaire(not disputing the fact that she has done great in the music industry) when it could have found a much cheaper spot in another residential community. And we have so many unemployed people and elderly who is in desperate need. We have plenty of roads that needs fixing and also plenty hungry children out there. That money could’ve been better spent.

Comment LinkMy father worked for over fifty years as a government worker and public servant.
He is one of the thousands who have contributed more to Barbados than this young lady has and more deserving of this gift
Is she really a role model for the young? NO! NO! They have enough problems.
This is shameful

Comment LinkThe people of Barbados have no right to be paying for land for an international star, while the hard working tax payers of Barbados, cannot get the government to build affordable homes for them. I have no problem with acknowledging her in another way like the renaming of her high school, or some theatrics. The government cry out about not having funds to pay a construction company for the work done building offices for the government, yet comes to the house to give corporate welfare to a multi-millionaire.

Comment LinkI agree 100% with Mr. Clarke for asking that question. Government is giving land to someone who can afford to live anywhere in the world.Shoot she can afford to buy that same piece of land that Government is gifting to her. What does it say to the rest of the population, who would love to buy a piece of land but cannot afford it because of the ridiculous prices. No one is saying that Government cannot support it’s people who do well. A question that should also be asked is will Government offer these kinds of incentives to the other Rihannas that are coming along?

Comment LinkI am not Rihanna’s Biggest Fan, first of all. To question, and actually have a debate about if she should be honored such a gesture is embarrasing as a Barbadian. Rihanna(and other artist)has taken this little island global with music. I feel the land is a fitting gesture, which is not costing the government millions, as it was offered by Sir Charles Williams at a small fraction of the worth. If we are going to honor our Ambassadors we should do it whole-heartedly or not at all.

Comment LinkI so agree with most people. Why spend that amount of money on Rihanna? Didn’t she already get property in Millennium Heights when she won the Grammy? Rihanna does not contribute anything to Barbados or the Barbadian economy. She has not even given a performance to the people of Barbados. Why are we bending over backwards to constantly give to her when she is not giving back to us. There are many more people who contribute so much to Barbados that could have benefited from that money and that land.

Comment LinkGiving that expensive land to a filthy rich young lady is like pouring water into the sea. There are many other less extravagant ways to show our appreciation to the young lady and her success,I am sure.
