Controversy over gift of land to Rihanna
Wed, June 16, 2010 - 12:17 AM
CONTROVERSY reared its ugly head yesterday as Barbados celebrated the achievements of pop star Rihanna with an Opposition MP querying Government’s choice of the exclusive, upscale Apes Hill, rather than any of the other new developments, like Bushy Park, to gift her a house spot.
But St George North MP Gline Clarke was told his question showed he had a “snobbish attitude”.
Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley, who introduced the resolution in the House of Assembly to vest 2 635 square metres of land at Apes Hill, St James in the name of the international star – Robyn Rihanna Fenty – also chided Clarke for his “audacity” and asked whether the exclusive community was “too good” for her.
Lashley noted that Clarke’s query was “suggesting to me, indirectly, that Apes Hill is too good for this young Barbadian”.
“To me, it was one downside in this debate that a Member . . . could be questioning why we are looking at land in Apes Hill for Rihanna, and why not Westbury.”
He also recalled Clarke saying someone had asked why Government was paying millions of dollars for land for someone who was making millions of dollars in the entertainment industry.
“The . . . member sat in a Cabinet that wasted taxpayers’ money on things that were promised that never came to fruition, and [there] was no protest,” he said.
“But here we [are] now supporting a young Barbadian that actually was able to penetrate the American music industry – and it is not easy to penetrate the American music industry – paving the way forward for other young aspiring entertainers, and a member in this House had the audacity to get up and question a Government that is making a contribution and rewarding a young Barbadian for his or her efforts; he has the audacity to get up and question why this Government is doing that.”
Clarke interrupted to say he had asked a simple, legitimate question: Whose idea it was for the land and whether it was Government’s or Sir Charles Williams’, and why Apes Hill and not Bushy Park or St Lucy?
“Is Apes Hill too good for Robyn Rihanna Fenty?” Lashley asked.
Clarke said he had never said Apes Hill was too good for anybody, but Government had to say why it chose Apes Hill.
Lashley said Cabinet took the Apes Hill decision in February 2008, but he had brought the Bushy Park matter to Parliament only two weeks ago.(AB)

After reading this article I must add my 2 cents.
1. Rihanna can afford to buy her own land.
2. She should politely refuse if offer because she don’t need land.
3. There are many Bajans who are in dire needed of shelter, jobs, and so forth and the money that will be use to buy this land can be utilize to help these people.
4. This money can be use for scholarships for students whose parents cannot afford to send them abroad to study disciplines not offered at any of the UWI campus.
5. If the government want to give Rihanna a gift they can name a street, roundabout, or establish a music school in her honor.
6. Please use money wisely and not frivolously. I 200% disagree with the gifting of land to Rihanna.
7. Rihanna is not the only one promoting Bim. There are many scholars and academics who are Bajans doing great things all over the world in the STEM fields. I don’t see the government recognizing them. Give me a break land for Rihanna.

Comment LinkI love Rihanna but like so many said before me, why give to those who can more than afford to buy the times over. Add a wing to QEH and name it the Rihanna Wing…well not really but you must understand where I’m going with this. Do something in her name but don’t spend millions (or how ever much) when poor people need it so much more.

Comment LinkI love my country sister, but i certainly do not see why it is necessary for the gov’t to donate land to her when she can easily afford it…use the funds from the sale of that land to help support those in need.

Comment LinkMinister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley; are you out of your mind?
I live in the USA and this is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a while, If Barbados can give someone who is making millions of dollar a parcel of land why should the USA give you Aid!
I was in Barbados last year and these are the issues that I saw QEH needs upgrading, Cancer, patients need more help, More space for the homeless, more funding is needed Education , Alzheimer’s need to be address,
Barbados has some much pressing issues and to spend time in the house discuss a piece to land to give to someone who is making millions. The President of USA Barrack Obama would sure asked “why are we trying to help the poor and these people giving away land to someone who can afford”
Mr. Lahley, please remember that you will be asking for a vote again.

Comment LinkPensioners get paid next to nothing, the country is in economic turmoil, and they really think giving land to a multimillionaire is appropriate really what has she done for Barbados put it on the map please, Barbados was always on the map, they are bajans in all parts of the world who give recognition to their country everyday. This is the same concept of a person not paying utilities bills but getting a swimming pool my gosh what has Barbados come to por favor prorities first.

Comment LinkI wonder how many people who are saying how ungrateful Bajans are to Rihanna are actually Bajans. I mean regardless of where you’re from, you should be aware of economic issues the world is facing and despite all political big talk Barbados is no better off. There is nothing wrong with honoring her but you should realise that we have honoured her several times. She is an Ambassador for goodness sake, we had an official Rihanna day & she was given much more in a lavish ceremony in Independence Square when she came here with Chris Brown if you didn’t know/have forgotten… and regardless of what she has done since… everytime someone does something they can be honoured without being exhorbitant.

Comment LinkWhat did Barbados do for her, a free high school education? This young lady was discovered by folks from overseas, who saw that she had what a takes for the glamour world of entertainment, had not for them she might be still in an every day job in Barbados, living from pay check to pay ckeck.I think she put Barbados on the map, in her own way. Others island do not drag their entaintainers name through the mud like this. Stop hating if is a big problem keep the dam piece of land. It do not sound good picking on a young lady age 22 like this, you would have wanted the same thing for your daughter. Think about this.

Comment LinkI think it is absolutely RIDICULOUS that the government is giving land to someone who can afford to buy it! Give the land to people who need it. I can see giving land to Rhianna if she is going to set up some kind of community center for the youth, or something to benefit the people of Barbados. What has Rhianna done to stimulate the economy???? Has she promoted tourism there…. donated funds to any organisations?????

Comment LinkThe modern day Barbados: Where money and lack of morals reign! Role models that corrupt our children, and destroy our family values are rewarded for their ‘good’ work. The rich who are raping the country and making their pockets fat, have no problem taking from the poor and making the rich richer! The so-called ‘higher ups’ and ‘better offs’ who do not care a whit for the people of Barbados who are ‘not in their category’: “God does not like ugly!!! and ‘day does run till night ketch it’!”

Comment LinkI just want to tell all those persons who agree with this decision to stop thinking that we who are disagreeing are doing so because we are crying her down…for goodness sake!!....LOOK AT THE BIGGER, DEEPER PICTURE…Rihanna has excelled, yes. if you say her name anywhere in the world persons would associate it with Barbados, yes. She does a little promoting of our country, yes. now what?!?!...rihanna is a millionaire and her money will continuously pile up. if you want to acknowledge achievement for someone like rihanna, land is definitely NOT the best way. there are many things which are not monetary that can actually mean a lot more (some good ideas were mentioned before)okayyy….it’s only $100,000 somebody said…i would never be able to say ONLY $100,000. you know what that can do for many poor people in barbados. GET A GRIP PLEASE!!!

Comment LinkI am in disbelief that the government is doing this for a person who is very rich in deed. What is wrong with you Bajans! The government bring shame upon their own head and upon their peoples head. You could never get away with this stupid butt kissing idea in the UK, Europe, the States and many part of the world.
The government should not be giving tax payers money to anyone who has done well for themselves. And by the way I heard Rhianna here in the UK on a talk show - she spoke with a american accent and not Bajan.

Comment LinkMy comments are as follows: Barbados has better ways to use this kind of money: medical clinics, road infrastructure improvements, the indigent, homeless, unemployed, reduced financing costs to the needy, more ambulances and fire trucks, etc., etc., etc. Recognize the artist for her achievements in some other tangible way (roads, parks, buildings, scholarship funds, etc.). Bajan in PHILA/USA

Comment LinkWhere is all this outrage is coming from? The government promised this for winning a grammy in 2008, and spent $100,000 (not 1 million) on it. Where was all the huffing and puffing back then? Now the value of the land has risen and she’s rich suddenly people have a problem? If giving away $100,000 is going to lead to starvation and economic collapse then we have bigger problems to be worrying about, not least the fact that it takes 2 years to get things done.
I’m proud Rhianna and wish her continued success in the future. I hope she enjoys her well deserved gift and doesn’t take on all this noise.

Comment LinkMy understanding is that Rihannna is not a 100% Barbadian. This young lady cannot really sing, or speak articulately. However, since the Barbados Government is giving away its land Willy Nilly, then Rihanna, you should jump into the humanitarian arena and help some of those poor Barbadian’s the government has ignored. Seek out those elderly people whose homes are falling apart, and give them a helping hand. The homeless people who have fallen on hard times, lend them a hand. They were many Barbadians who may not have been on the internationally level that the government have totally ignored. What a tragedy !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment LinkBarbadians take note of the MPs who approved this and vote them out of office in the next election!
This is not just about Rihanna. It’s time to stop all of these gifts of land and cars to athletes, entertainers and the well-to-do. Let’s get our social welfare policies in order before we start giving away land. Barbados is a country with first world problems and third-world resources. We are not in a position to grant wealthy people extravagant gifts.

Comment Linktalk about pouring water in the sea.
Rhianna is not a charity case.
May be instead of giving her land, the Government can get her to support a children’s music programme and name it for her.
how about taking care of “the poor among us?”
