THREE POLICE OFFICERS were being questioned last night in connection with the alleged rape of a Jamaican woman in February.
Sources told the DAILY NATION yesterday the three, including a female constable, were being investigated for allegedly committing the offence while the woman was in police custody in the holding cells of Central Police Station sometime between the night of February 28 and the next morning.
The 27-year-old woman, of Spanish Town, reported she was sexually assaulted and raped following her arrest at Grantley Adams International Airport on drug trafficking charges.
The woman, who appeared in a District “A” Magistrates’ Court on March 1, was remanded to HMP Dodds, St Philip, to await trial.
Last week, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Tyrone Griffith, who disclosed that the matter had been at an advanced and delicate stage, noted that a full report would be made when investigations were completed.
Noting that the probe into the Jamaican woman’s allegation was being headed by a senior cop, Griffith hinted that whatever action was required would be taken by the police.
The latest development follows an allegation from another Jamaican woman, Shanique Myrie, who accused Immigration authorities of finger-raping her when she arrived at the airport on March 14.
Myrie’s claim triggered outbursts from her homeland, including political parties and national organisations.
The reported incident is currently being discussed at the diplomatic level with a Jamaican government party arriving in Barbados last week for meetings with local Government officials.
