Cuban ready for deal

Cuban ready for deal Raul T. Garcia. (FP)

By Barry Alleyne | Fri, February 10, 2012 - 12:08 AM

Raul T. Garcia, the 57-year-old Cuban-born, America-raised man who is on a hunger strike in jail is willing to start eating porridge if Government agrees to transfer him to a non-punitive facility.

This was revealed yesterday by attorney-at-law David Comissiong, who received permission to visit Garcia from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart on Wednesday.

Comissiong met with Garcia at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds for an hour yesterday, and his services were later retained with a view to being part of the negotiations with Government to find Garcia a different temporary home, or a country willing to accept him.

Being released into Barbadian society remains a possibility, if given that opportunity, Comissiong also stated yesterday.

I thought the AG was dealing with this.  It seem if you do not get what you want you will walk over those responsible and go to the top.  Just asking, are those holding portfolios unable to deal with matters for which they are responsible.  I agree, do not release him into the Barbadian community.  lf they can find a suitable holding bay place him there, while they work with HASTE to find a country that will accept him.

I am sorry for Mr. Garcia and his family but once you make a choice you have to know the consequences and this situation he finds himself is just another consequence.

But most of all, I am sorry for Barbados. Barbados doesn’t deserve all the bad publicity that this situation is causing.

Mr. Garcia violated the laws in Cuba, USA, Colombia and BARBADOS… I don’t see why Barbados has to be the one to take all the heat…

Also, as far as I know there are full diplomatic relations between Cuba and Barbados. Barbados was one of the first countries to establish full diplomatic relations with Cuba. I have not heard a word from the Cuban Embassy in Barbados. Is this the way Cuba deals with its Caribbean counterparts? Allowing them to take all the heat caused by unwanted Cuban citizens?  It seems to me a very strange way of strengthen ties of “friendship and cooperation.”

Well…..¡Amanecerá y veremos…!

I am not yet convinced this man wants to settle in Barbados, even if financed by outside sources, but that’s just me.

What’s wrong with all you people. It seems as none of you have ever done wrong in your life. HE DID HIS TIME. HE PAID HIS DEBT TO SOCIETY. Ignorant mentality….typically bajan.

@ Lloyd Garraway
“Aren’t our own drug lords not release back into Barbadian society, how could you be so heartless ???”
I suggest you have another look at your comment paying specific attention to the words our own, with own being the operative word.
He is NOT our own, nor is he an innocent drug mule, isn’t he a career criminal?
Let me just throw this rhetorical question out there.  If he is release into Barbadian society and reverts to type, whom will you blame?

Yes, he committed a crime many years ago. Whoever has not made a mistake in their life; let them cast the first stone. He served his 16 year sentence as a model prisoner, and even spent years counseling fellow inmates about the negative consequences of drug trade/use. He is a rehabilitated man. If I were in his shoes I would starve myself too. To think after serving a 16year sentence, to still be locked in a tiny cell 17months after you have completed your sentence with no end in sight. It breaks my heart. Have some compassion people. I wish the United States would take him back so he could reunite with his family and have some peace and perhaps a little happiness. Bless you Raul Garcia.

I have faith that there are some AMAZING people out there that will take the time to work their magic and help facilitate Raul Garcia being set free & for you beautiful souls, THANK YOU! My prayers are being sent your way. Love and light.
