DEAR CHRISTINE,
LET me take this opportunity to thank you for the good work you are doing to help the people of Barbados.
Let me share my story. Since my mum died two years ago, things have not been the same for us. Right now I am out of work, and have been for almost a year. I went for interviews but still have not been able to get a job. Things are really bad with me and I need help badly. I am asking the public for some help.
All I need is a job.
I can type, do sales assistant work, care for the elderly, baby sit, perform receptionist, security or cashier duties. I am also willing to work at a school canteen, with the School Meals Service, or performing house cleaning duties.
There’s not much food in the house and I am afraid of dying from starvation. There are nine of us living in the house and only one person is working.
I have two nephews who can do labour work and a niece who can do baby sitting. Sometimes I don’t even have bus fare when I am going for an interview, and then the people don’t even call you back for the job. I have five CXC’s.
I can’t sleep, thinking about what I am going through. Please, I am asking somebody to employ me.
Our electricity is about to be cut off, and I hope not the water. There’s no money coming in to help pay the bills. I don’t know how I am living.
Right now I have to call a friend and ask to have some groceries and a bottle of gas brought to me to get something to eat.
I am not even sure if I am going to get them.
Christine, you have helped a lot of people and I hope you can help me too. I just need a job.
I only get one square meal per day. I cannot afford to eat breakfast.
I wait until 4 p.m. to cook so that the food would last me throughout the night; that way I won’t go to bed hungry.
Everywhere I go people are telling me things are slow and they are not hiring. I feel so depressed.
I am looking forward to you helping me to find a job. Please take this letter seriously.
In the meantime, if there is anyone who can give me donations I would appreciate it very much. Right now I have to get soap, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, deodorant and cream which are the necessities. I don’t know who to turn to for these things.
I wish that someone was in my shoes to see what I am going through. This is a painful situation for me.
I would like the churches to pray for me; that God would intervene and send help. I really need a job that I can collect a pay cheque at the end of the week.
My niece also has two young children and there is no money coming in to help buy school items.
She is very depressed over this. We are in a pretty bad shape. Please help us Barbados. This is a matter of urgency.

 I really feel your pain and understand the urgency. I am printing your letter so that good Samaritans in our society would respond.
In the case of your niece, I recommend that she visit the courts to seek child maintenance for her two children.
I will be contacting the Welfare Department to see what other assistance can be given, and will maintain contact with you.
