DEAR CHRISTINE: In need of job and furniture

Tue, August 24, 2010 - 12:00 AM

Dear Chirstine,
I am a single mother of five children and I am currently unemployed. I am in dire need of some furniture and some appliances; bedroom furniture, dining table and chairs, living room suite, fridge, pots, pans, etc., any that would be suitable for a house.
It doesn’t have to be new, just in good condition.
I am willing to work. I have experience in housekeeping and working in the laundry department.
Thanks in advance, Christine, and I’m looking forward to your readers’ assistance.

WoW- what a big ask. Nothing wrong with helping those in need, but please.  Plasma TV and direct TV are missing from the list.  Sounds like a trip to Courts or Standard is required.

I’m at a loss for words. How about asking for basic needs? What’s being requested is a fully furnished house. I’m not judging her situation but the requests seem to be a bit much. Just puzzled that’s all.

I am wondering what happened to this single mother of five that left her in this predicament. Was she previously employed and lost her position, did she not have these items before, was she evicted from her property and lose her belongings. Also what happened to the father or fathers of the five children, why are they unable to assist. There are too many unanswered questions to this short but considerable request.

Every year in the run up to Christmas Christine received letters from people in need. Every Christmas in Barbados I see people shopping, replacing ‘old’ things with the latest. Christine I’ve always admired your good work, but you need as much help as the people you help. Idea- if someone can donate a warehouse, people can donate all the goods they no longer use-electrical, clothes, plates, furniture etc. We used to recycle school uniforms and books years ago! Churches have electricians whom could donate their time to service these electrical goods to ensure they are working. Too many working goods are in the land fill, when one mans rubbish is another’s treasure. It’s called recycling and it’s done all over the world! Next time you decide to update your goods, think who can use the old ones!

I do not mind helping but with a family of 5 you would expect that the basics would be there already. People need to get their act togther. First there is a thing called contraceptives and if you cannot afford those, then abstain.
