DEAR CHRISTINE: Is 15 too young to have a serious boyfriend?

Dear Christine,

I am a 15-year-old who needs someone to share with, so I am writing to you. I know you may tell me I am too young to be thinking about having a boyfriend, but there is a boy at my school [whom] I really love. I believe he loves me too.

My mother is okay with [my] talking to him, but my father does not think I should be talking to boys at my age and that I should be concentrating on my schoolwork. I am doing relatively well in school right now.

Do you really think that at 15 I am too young to have a serious boyfriend?

Dear Stacy,

I have to admit that I share your father’s sentiments – 15 is too young to have a serious relationship with any member of the opposite sex.

I see no harm in having friends of both sexes at any age, but if you are talking about actually having a boyfriend that you could potentially have an intimate relationship with, I’d say no.

You’re at the age where you should be preparing for your CXC certificates. I believe, therefore, that you should invest your time in studying and choosing a career path. Avoid anything right now that would distract you from doing so – including having a “serious relationship”.

Your time right now should be spent on preparing your mind for the life ahead of you and what you can do to make it the best it can be, to be able to function as an independent, capable, self supporting woman. Study hard, and enjoy your friends of both sexes. There's lots of time for the serious relationship.
