Death flame
Firemen battling the blaze along Tudor Street last night.
Sat, September 04, 2010 - 1:45 AM
It was a scene straight out of the drama series CSI.
With a blazing inferno way too close for comfort, scores of onlookers still gathered by the minute, while firemen fought gallantly for hours to control a blaze in Tudor Street, The City, last night.
The fire at Campus Trendz Clothing Store emitted billowing smoke for almost four hours, which kept firemen and members of the Coast Guard on bay.
Coast Guard personnel actually entered the burning building on a number of occasions in an attempt to rescue those trapped on the inside.
However, despite use of a turntable ladder and the bravery of the rescue team wearing special suits and in some cases oxygen tanks, six still died.
Reports indicated that the first policeman on the scene rushed in and reported hearing screams, but the thick smoke forced him to retreat.
Firemen early on the scene just after 7 p.m. also faced a number of challenges in getting into the building as they tried to do so from the roof beside the clothing store, but had to retreat because of the intense heat.
The smoke at the one-door entrance, also meant the rescue team had vision challenges.
Rescue officials on location said the first ambulance left with a woman suffering from smoke inhalation and what seemed to have been stab wounds. (ES)

Comment LinkIf they ever was a case for the death penalty it is this one.I hope these monsters are caught ASAP. I hope the RBPF are well equipped to solve this case in a timely fashion. This is the second such incident in recent weeks, with the same modus operandi. How well trained are the police in BIM that they cannot get these crimes solved.
It is a crying shame, that this little rock, seems to be going down the road of Jamaica, and Trinidad in the upsurge in serious crime in BIM. Citizens have been voicing their concerns for sometime now about the seriousness of this problem, with no recourse. Do we need to call in the overseas help, or send our current officers for training elsewhere. The RBPF have to out-think the criminals, match their firepower, and train like we are at war, to solve crime in BIM. My heart hurts for these families that have lost loved ones in this fire, all because soneone wanted a payday without working for it. I say HANG then.

Comment LinkI am so saddened to see that this kind of tragedy has occurred in Barbados and I am asking God to please be with the families of those who lost their lives in this fire and help them to get trough this very difficult time in their lives. Was burning down the building truly necessary?? This is the second time in a couple of weeks that businesses were robbed and burned, this ignorant and heartless act needs to stop!!

Comment LinkWhat a terrible reminder that the death-penalty issue is un-avoidable: A person who attempts a robbery, and is so sadistic as to then burn the place down, with six innocent people within, does NOT deserve anything less! Far more, to add to taxpayer burdens to feed , clothe, and provide a home and free medical attention for the rest of their lives. Hell, no, hanging them is not GUARANTEED to be a deterrent , but there is a good chance it will, and for sure, for the ultimate crime, they they will be paying the ultimate PENALTY. God forgive me, but those amnesty folks will only see the light when one of THEIR loved ones is mercilessly slaughtered. Why do we delude ourselves, and meekly surrender our citizen’s rights?

Comment LinkTHIS IS SO SAD.
Cannot beleive that this is my Barbados.
Shameful on the part of the perpertrators.
A Friday evening in the heart of busy Bridgetown and they would attempt such a stunt which I am quite sure they did not anticipate would have resulted in such a tragedy this morning.
My heart goes out to the family in this difficult and painful time.
To the authorities, we need to do something about this, it needs to be dealt with.
As a hardworking, law-abiding, taxpaying citizen of Barbados, I am saying this is not acceptable.

Comment LinkThis is so very tragic. It is beyond comprehension right now how this young people lost their lives so senselessly while going about their daily tasks at work.
I am not one for capital punishment, but on this occasion the persons responsible for this heinous act deserve to be HUNG!!!! These young men of today do not want to work and make a decent living., They want the niceties but they would rob and kill first. What kind of children are we raising today?
My friend would have perished in that fire if she did not have to go and run an errand for her mother. She usually goes and assist the staff tidy up on Friday evenings. Now her friends are all gone. So very, very tragic. But, God is not sleeping for he does not like ugly.

Comment Linkit is really hurtful to see that Barbados has come to this level of crime, are we doing this to our own or is this an outside influence, people we need to nip this in the bud now this is the second robbery with the mode. Why would we want harm innocent persons who are making an honest dollar.
We need to catch these cowards now and hang them we are to soft with criminals we need to start getting tough on crime especially like this one.

Comment LinkWhat an unnecessary tragedy. The persons responsible should have known the persons in that store would have been too scared to retaliate. Only cowards behave in such a manner. I hope they would never find any peace when they realize they caused so many to perish. To all the families and especially Shannna’s mum may you find comfort in God’s arms at this time.

Comment LinkThe country is run by lawyers and they are the problem and should be the first ones to go. Mention the word Death Penalty and see how many of them come out of the wordwork sounding off about the Death penalty is Cruel and inhumane punisment. No consideration would be given to the cruel and inhumane punsihment that these victims of this heinuous act had to endure and ended their life. The lawyers will say that this will not bring back the people. But my belief is that, “An eye for an Eye ” and I never seen a hanged man come back and kill anyone else. if you want to live like Barbados is the wild west then you live by the gun you must expect and be prepared to die by the gun. It is time that Barbados stop treatiing these things like a 24 hour wonder. Peace and love to everyone else but Sharia law for these animals

Comment LinkI think we all think about the death penalty at a time like this, senseless action of a few if we think that hanging is inhuman, there are other forms, electric chair and lethal injection, but some form of deterant must be implemented or these type crimes will continue.

Comment LinkThis type of robbery happened in Barbados not too long ago fortunately then no one died however tragically people died this time. Was anyone ever apprehended for the first robbery attempt? Now it has happend again questions need to be asked. As for the Sick people who commited this crime they should be made to live their entire life in prison. Death penalty is ineffective just look at countries which have the death penaly murders and other hidious crimes still take place.

Comment LinkThis news made me cry. could there be such heartless people out there? This a senseless tradegy. My people, my people why are you so? Does the money you would have robbed them of given you the satisfaction you are seeking. I know God is going to be in the midst of those families who were involved in this tradegy. He is so mighty that he will also be with the culprits that caused it as well. Amen and Amen
