Death flame
Firemen battling the blaze along Tudor Street last night.
Sat, September 04, 2010 - 1:45 AM
It was a scene straight out of the drama series CSI.
With a blazing inferno way too close for comfort, scores of onlookers still gathered by the minute, while firemen fought gallantly for hours to control a blaze in Tudor Street, The City, last night.
The fire at Campus Trendz Clothing Store emitted billowing smoke for almost four hours, which kept firemen and members of the Coast Guard on bay.
Coast Guard personnel actually entered the burning building on a number of occasions in an attempt to rescue those trapped on the inside.
However, despite use of a turntable ladder and the bravery of the rescue team wearing special suits and in some cases oxygen tanks, six still died.
Reports indicated that the first policeman on the scene rushed in and reported hearing screams, but the thick smoke forced him to retreat.
Firemen early on the scene just after 7 p.m. also faced a number of challenges in getting into the building as they tried to do so from the roof beside the clothing store, but had to retreat because of the intense heat.
The smoke at the one-door entrance, also meant the rescue team had vision challenges.
Rescue officials on location said the first ambulance left with a woman suffering from smoke inhalation and what seemed to have been stab wounds. (ES)

Comment LinkI hope the police department once and for all realise that we have some serious issues in this paradise. Today in town I saw a group of thugs smoking weed and cursing nasty in front of two policemen in the bus terminal and the police officers didn’t do anything about it. You know what I mean. My heart goes to anyone affected by this event but is time to start HANGING these criminals. I want the POLICE to do MORE. How many more lives is it going to take? Who is supposed to be next? The police knows where the thugs like to lime, go and get them all. So sick of this .....

Comment LinkWords cannot express the remorse being felt for these families. Nothing we can say or do can make a difference. These cowards need to be caught and brought to justice, like yesterday. They are becoming too brazen with these acts, therefore law enforcement need to step it up and let them know this lawlessness and disrespect for life will not be tolerated. My heart goes out to Nikki, Marshall, and Akeem. To all the other families, my condolences to you also.

Comment LinkThis didnt start today, it has its roots way back. We live in a world society which is designed to create criminals. Crime pays; the police, the lawyers, the judges, the prison personnel, court officials etc. In order for this system to flourish as is, the beast must be fed; there is no real interest in rehabilitating criminals because it would put a lot of people out of work. If change is what we are asking for then it has to be holistic. Let the sociologists, pychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and whoever else earn their keep by attacking the cause and not the symptoms.

Comment LinkWell it is sad that our country has come to this. I am praying for true justice, if not by man by God. However the police need to see if there were any surveillance cameras in the area. Next contact nearby gas stations or stores to see who bought a small amount of gas or kerosene. Then narrow it down by doing a time-line. If as eyewitnesses say that people were running by foot, they would probably be from the area. They also have to check all known criminals with a history of robbery and assault, even those who were deported back from the US for the said thing. May God send speedy punishment.

Comment Linkit is very sad indeed that the boys which we raise into men could become so wicked and commit such an awful deed. it is in the best nature of the country of Barbados to deal with this situation right away before this gets out of control. if we can deal with these issues as soon as possible we can live a very peaceful and enjoyable life. i hope that whoever these person(s) are will not be only delt with by the Lord but as by the law.i beg of the law to bring these person(s) to justice and make an example of these men to make sure that nothing like this ever happen again in this country.

Comment Linkwe turn on each other because we lack knowledge of who we are, not only do we need the death penalty, we first need ensure our children be conscious of self by demanding that our schools teach black history to raise self awareness and self esteem, so we wont turn on each other without mercy. That we retain the spare the rod and spoil the child tradition, keep then rod of correction in the home and in schools. The education authorities keep our children ignorant of self in order to protect those who would appear on the other side of history, its sheer ignorance that hosts this sort of behaviour.
May the families of the loss
find stength and comfort in the bosom of the Most High.

Comment LinkI feel for the families that have lost their loved ones in such a cowardly attack. I spent several months over the last few years training the barabados ambulance service, and I think that we should remember the trauma that the rescue workers have to deal with during such incidents.

Comment LinkPeople say do away with the death penalty, I said so once too, but when people can perpetuate these horrible acts of atrocity on their fellow men, there is only one recourse left. The law of Moses is not a crime. An eye for an eye. If the death penalty is the only way that these heartless individuals will understand that they cannot reign down these horrible acts on others, then I say HANG THEM ALL. Not just in Barbados, but all over the globe. When they commit these atrocities and think that they will just get jail time.. prove them wrong.. as a matter of fact hire me to hang them.. I will complete the task with pleasure and a great big smile on my face.. tell the PM to call me I will accept the job.. that will give me a reason to move back to my first love BIM.

Comment LinkMy condolences to the families and friends of the victims. My heart goes out to all who witnessed this tragedy. We have become a society of instant gratification; we want it now at any means necessary. Unfortunately as nations grow so does the crime.
Unfortunately, more often tragedy creates lessons learned. Many stores in town have one entrance, are those needed building codes feasible? If the risk cannot be eliminated completely then there should be some measures introduced to lessen the threat. Have a fire alarm and fire extinguishers on station; be sure each worker knows the location and is trained on operation; have fire/emergency drills monthly empower employees with the knowledge needed. When there is an emergency everyone wouldn’t have to panic because of ignorance. The Fire station used to give classes on fire safety, how to enter or exit a burning building etcetera.
If this evil doing has affected you in some way please seek professional help. You need it.
So Sad

Comment LinkI’m stunned and shocked! I pray for the victim’s relatives and friends. I also pray that the police will not rest until they find the lawless, evils persons responsible!
As this seems to be the latest type of crime to afect Barbados, may I suggest that shop owners start investing in fire blankets, extinguishers and fire exits. It might save lives in the future, if this horror crime does not cease! A sad time for the whole of Barbados, my heart weeps!

Comment LinkI was so shocked, wen i got up Saturday and heard about what happened. I had to ask if it happened in Trinidad or Jamaica only to be told no it happen in Barbados. I cant believe people can be so wicked and cruel. I hope these criminals are caught and dealt with harshly, sending them to serve time in prison is like letting them of the hook basically. My condolences goes to their families and close friends. may their souls rest in peace and their murderers’ souls be tormented and miserable for ever. God is not sleeping and he hates injustice.

Comment LinkThe people of Barbados need to come together and pray for these families,it is also time for the leaders of this island to make a decision on the death penalty I know people have human rights concerns, but sometimes it seems the innocent people who are hurt by these crimes don’t get JUSTICE.

Comment LinkIt makes me wonder how the criminals who caused this can sleep at night and live with themselves, knowing what they did. I read this news with thoughts of Barbados of yesteryear. We used to leave home and not close windows or lock doors. It hurts my heart to see that Barbados has become influenced by evil American television, and that people copy what they see.

Comment LinkCan you in your wildest dream imagine you are in a store shopping, and this torture take place. The young men who did this had it planned and have no respect to the people who they left in that store. I need the government to stop sitting on their laurels and start the death penalty, if the person is guilty hang them, do you know the hell these victims family is going through at this moment. How can anyone take so much lives for a couple dollars that they will spend off in two minutes because they did not work for it. It came to them free, but to the victims family a heavy, heavy price. To the family of the victims, cry and pray, God will see you through.
