This year’s premier agricultural show will be without one of its big sellers.
The rapidly spreading deadly disease citrus greening has been affecting citrus trees and the Ministry of Agriculture has halted their sale.
Agriculture officer Michael James confirmed that the selling of the trees such as lime, tangerines, oranges and grapefruits has been suspended at Agrofest and the ministry’s outlets, including the preferred Soil Conservation Unit in St Andrew. Lime trees and other citruses account for half of the plants sold at the three-day agricultural display of animals, plants, ground provisions and other farming-related activities which starts today.
“We put a halt on the sale of the plants because obviously we don’t want to be contributing to the spread,” he said.
