Dispute enters a new phase

Dispute enters a new phase (Picture by Ricardo Leacock.)

Cautioning that a dangerous precedent could be set, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart yesterday revealed the impasse between principal of Alexandra School, Jeff Broomes, and striking members of the Barbados Secondary Teachers Union would be investigated by a commission of inquiry later this year.

At a press conference convened minutes after his usual Thursday Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister also said separating Broomes from the school, as requested by the union, would create too many legal challenges.

Here, Prime Minister Stuart pondering before answering a question from the Press at yesterday’s conference.

"Later this year." When exactly?
How much longer must the parties involved in this dispute labour on? What about the children who are sitting CXC exams in a matter of weeks? What about the taxpayers whose hard-earned $$$ are being wasted while this drags on? If Minister Jones or Prime Minister Stuart had a child in 5th form at Alexandra, how would they feel? Would they have acted any differently? Applying the Golden Rule can prevent a myriad of problems. I urge dispatch in handling this matter and pray that all parties will cooperate and let the Holy Spirit guide them to a just solution quickly.

How can a leader of a country relinquish power to the sovereign that was revoked it 1966?. GABBY FOR PRIME MINISTER, BUSSA MUSSE TURNING IN HIS GRAVE.

But with respect Mr Prime Minister, isn't it true that from day one the call from the Union was that Mr Broomes to be separated from the school and that it was quite adamant that this is what they wanted and that nothing less would do.

This, in my view was too ridiculous to consider as a bargaining position from the outset. Even Ms Redman should have known that for her request to be granted, a process would have to be gone through and that it would take time like everything else. I wonder how she would re-act, should a Principal call for one of her members to be separated from a school without due process. She has gone so far out on a limb now that she cannot turn back without looking silly, like the grand old Duke of York.

My view is that the current action should have been implemented in January. I wonder if these striking Teachers are getting paid. I believe that these Teachers should be given a date to get back to work while they case is being investigated and if they fail to do so, they should be dealt with appropriately.

I really hope and pray that, despite the action of these Teachers, those children who are due to take exams this year get brilliant results
