Eye on Globe
THE GLOBE BUILDING on Roebuck Street. (FP)

THE 64-YEAR-OLD Globe building that closed its cinema business on Roebuck Street, The City, last December 31, is being looked at by Government as a possible venue for entertainment events.
This was confirmed yesterday by an official of the cinema, while Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley would only say that the Globe is an ideal location for the potentially-viable cultural sector.
A highly placed source at the Globe, which was bought by the Ali family in the 1950s, confirmed that a letter had been sent to the minister about two weeks ago informing him that the building was still up for sale.
He added that the ministry had responded but “didn’t give a definite yes or no [to buying the property], but it sounds as though they’re interested”. (RJ)

*stupes* This government too ‘nuff love to waste taxpayers money. This tight already and they can’t do without spending. What’s wrong with other venues? The Hilton Hotel? The Steel shed at Queen’s Park. The Frank Collymore Hall Theatres, The Opel Amphitheatre in the middle of the General Post Office complex, Independence Square, Ilaro Court, The LES Cultural and Conference Centre, or the cultural centre that was said to be built off Spring Garden Highway which should instead go up in St. Lucy away from the already overburdened Bridgetown corridor. Now this government talking about overseas nationals which sell land can’t take that money back outta Barbados. *stupes* DLP is bare jokers.

Comment LinkDidn’t give a definitive yes or no sounds like the start of piddling. I agree there is potential in this venture, but from where will the funding be derived? NIS again? I hope the Ali’s won’t allow themselves to “get string out” until the building becomes similar in condition to the Empire Theatre.
