THIRTY PER CENT OF THE CANDIDATES who sat the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) in the 2011 May to June sitting obtained no subjects at acceptable grades.

This statistic was disclosed yesterday by the senior assistant registrar, examinations administration and security division of the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC), Susan Giles, as she made remarks during the launch of 15 study guides produced by CXC and British-based publishing house Nelson Thornes, targeting CSEC and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).  

According to a concerned Giles, with the cost of education to regional governments rising exponentially, there must be some correlation between candidate performance and the money being spent.

Giles also stated that the council’s engagement in teacher training workshops across the region had revealed there was a struggle with the paradigm shift from teacher-centred to learner-centred education.

If this 30% figure does not get you and the Caricom's attention, then only divine intervention will help Barbados and the region.

It is time that the Caricom Goverments, treat human resources, as a product like they treat tourism and all other industries.

Until they start to see human resources as such, we in the Caribbean will continue to be left behind, in this era of globalization.
