Families fearful of losing homes

Two families went to sleep last night with a fear of their homes being demolished looming over their heads.

On Tuesday Jeffrey Stoute was told his two-bedroom house, as well as the three-bedroom home of his sister Margaret Stoute, would be dismantled. Both houses are located at Belle Gully, St Michael.

In addition Margaret’s son Hallam Stoute, who has an auto bodywork shop on the land, has to find another place to set up his business.

Margaret shares her home with two sons while Jeffrey has a son who visits.

“That is too little time,” was the cry of Margaret and Jeffrey, who have been living on the land for almost 60 years. Their father rented the land and when he died Jeffrey took over the rental arrangement and paid the $300 annual rent.

However, in November 2012 the landlord stopped taking the rent after the court made a judgment that the family had until April 29, 2013, to remove the two houses from the parcel of land. (LK)
