Force not attracting recruits

The Royal Barbados Police Force needs manpower but Acting Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith says the law enforcement agency is not readily attracting Barbadian recruits.

Griffith disclosed there were about 160 vacancies throughout the force’s  ranks from  sergeant to deputy commissioner, but he said:  “A lot of people don’t want to join law enforcement; a lot of people are critical of law enforcement … nobody comes forward to join and those people who come sometimes are not very suitable.”

The police chief said any recruitment effort should ensure “that we get decent officers” joining – “honest upright, hardworking law-abiding” men and women prepared to look after the interest of Barbadians and visitors.

Griffith gave a wide-ranging address on the state of crime in Barbados at meeting of the Rotary Cub West at Bagatelle Great House Tuesday. (GC)
