Giant Pawpaws

Esther Alleyne has a green thumb, but even she is surprised by the size of the fruit growing on her papaya tree.
The largest papaya on the tree measures at least ten inches long and has not even ripened yet.
They are more commonly known in Barbados as pawpaws.
“I am an agriculturalist; so whatever I plant, grows – although I don’t know how these got so big. It must be God,” Alleyne said.
She said she got some papayas from Betty Allsopp (who passed by during the interview but declined to be photographed), and decided to plant some of the seeds “in April or May last year”. She mixed ash with the dirt.
Alleyne said two plants sprung up, but one died; the other flourished.
When the fruits ripen, “I have to give back to Miss Allsopp. I have at least six people in mind”.
