Give students a chance

FASHION DESIGNERS ARE being called on to give garment design students of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) the opportunity to produce their garments.
This call came from instructor Joy Prime as she spoke on a unique collaboration between some students and fashion designer Andrea King.
Five students doing their industrial placement at the school will produce the 14 garments in King’s The 5th Element Design Spring/Summer Collection 2015.
When a NATION team visited today, the students were constructing the working patterns and they are expected to start cutting next week.
Prime said the partnership gives the students the chance to practise what they learn in class.
“In a way they are lucky they get to see the whole process.  They had a focus group session with the designer and discussed the garments; they got to have an input into how they are produced,” she said. (LK)
