Goals galore in 7-a-side

Sat, June 23, 2012 - 12:02 AM

Seven-a-side hockey just seems to be the perfect recipe for goals.

There was a flurry of goals last Saturday when the Barbados Hockey Federation’s 7-A-Side Club Tournament flicked off last Saturday at the Hockey Centre, Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Wildey.

BNB Deacons women defeated Combermere School Old Scholars (CSOS) 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller, with Annette Superville getting a brace for the winners. Ria Harrison also had a double strike for CSOS.

The Deacons men were in an even more ruthless mood, beating CSOS 8-5. National forward Shonkeel Wharton led the way for the Deacons men, scoring a beaver trick.

In the next match, the Barbados Defence Force (BDF), having only four players, went down 2-3 to the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT). Curwen Brewster put the goals on the sheet for BDF but BUT’s David Weatherhead scored twice to help put BUT in winner’s row.

CGI Maple women won the last match of the day, edging CIBC FCIB National Sports Council 12-14. Besa Rowe led the goal feast for Maple with four goals while Beverley Best got a hat-trick. Ayanna Wilson scored twice for the losers.

On Sunday at Trents, St James, University of the West Indies (UWI) and YMCA played to a goalless draw in the Outdoor Club League.

The UWI girls fared better than their male counterparts, stunning hosts Maple 1-0 in an unexpected result. The lone goal came after UWI were awarded a penalty corner minutes into the first half.

The confident drive from Shernelle O’Neale caught a deflection before slipping past Maple’s goalkeeper into the far corner of the goal.

The 7-A-Side Club Tournament continues today at the Hockey Centre from 2 p.m., while the third day of the Outdoor Club League will be held at Bank Hall from noon tomorrow. (PR/EZS)
