Some Caribbean Governments have been accused of “drinking milk through the fence [for free] but don’t want to buy the cow” when it comes to LIAT.

A frank Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) president Dr Warren Smith charged that regional governments had together shelled out more than $100 million annually in subsidies to foreign carriers to fly to their countries but some of them refused to invest in the struggling regional carrier that faithfully served their countries.

He accused some countries of not paying anything but still wanted to “enjoy the sweets”.

Insisting that regional transport, including aviation, cried out for a “regional solution”, Smith said LIAT had never made a profit because of its economic and social functions.

The rising cost of living in the Caribbean as a whole is making things harder for anyone to do business or job creations. I say this because we are simply making it impossible to survive within the next 20 yrs. When I look at the cost of food and energy essential necessities for the consumers of our land, have we stop to think how much will a whole chicken cost in 20yrs from now? Why is this pace so important that we are slowly killing progress? It cannot continue at this level because at some time this trend will burst and we will be worse off than we have started, this get rich quick system are only for a few and the majority will suffer because of it, with high crime and poverty.
The Caribbean has resources where we can help ourselves to some extent but somehow not using the tools to do so. We have oil and certain foods to keep us going, just like how some leading countries are cutting certain imports from us, we seem not to learn from this and that bothers me to see Caribbean leaders not taking the right steps to protect their own. It is time we start working together or divided we fall…that simple. There are not that much Caribbean carriers and why Liat not making any profits using our Routes are just a shock to me. There are enough people in the Caribbean who will travel with Liat if the improvement and quality of these flights are implemented. Talking about Milking the cow and not wanting to buy it just don’t make since. We in the Caribbean have always supported Liat, I myself have flown many years with this carrier but service and improvement of a commodity are essential to customers, who are we fooling.
