PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (CMC) – President Michel Martelly has led the country in paying tribute to Guy Alexandre, a former Haiti ambassador to the Dominican Republic who died yesterday of a heart attack. He was 68.
“The Head of State, on behalf of the Government and people of Haiti, expressed his sincere condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the diplomat who spent much of his career to defend the interests of Haiti in neighbouring Republic,” according to a statement issued by the Office of the President.
It said that Martelly was inviting Haiti’s young people to “be guided by the sense of patriotism and professionalism that has always characterised the course of Ambassador Alexandre” who recently published a book on how to improve the relationship between the two countries.
The Dominican Republic Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso said Santo Domingo “join with the pain felt at the moment by his family, including his wife and children, to whom we express our sympathy and condolences.
“We believe that the best tribute we can pay to his memory is to reaffirm our conviction that dialogue is the most appropriate solution to discuss ideas and find a consensus in our democracies,” he said.
Alexandre had on Thursday evening attended a reception at the Dominican Embassy in Port-au-Prince to commemorate the independence of the Dominican Republic.
Alexandre was first assigned to the Dominican Republic in 1991. His diplomatic career ended in 2003 during the uprising against former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. But he would later serve as an adviser on international relations under Haiti’s 2004-2006 interim government.
He also served as a senior adviser to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Haiti.
“In a way, he was the institutional memory of Haiti on migration and as such was a valued expert on the subject for IOM,” said IOM spokeswoman Ilaria LANZONI.
In addition to his wife, Alexandre is survived by daughter Rachelle Alexandre as well as three grandchildren.
