Haynesville converted their 2013 silver into gold by capturing the second Ministry of Youth NCSA, HIV and AIDS Block Draughts Tournament title and a prize of $1 500 on Wednesday night.
Playing at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Haynesville defeated Parris Hill in a close and exciting battle 19-13, with captain Adrian Birch, Desmond Pilgrim, Winston Mayers and Patrick Lloyd pulling off the win for the St James squad.
Parris Hill, who had shocked favourites Ellerton in the semi-finals at Ellerton’s home base, earned $1 000.
Ellerton defeated Bridgefield 25-7 in the battle for the third spot to garner $700. Bridgefield collected $500.
Ellerton also gained another reward with Roland Waithe capturing the MVP title and $200.
A record 16 teams had registered for the second edition of the tournament.
Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley, who had conceptualised the competition, said that the concentration and alertness gained from playing draughts could play a key role in the social development of the youth. (KB)
